Rocketman
The film tells the story of Elton John's
life, from his early years in Pinner, Middlesex as a
prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music, through his
influential and enduring musical partnership with
lyricist Bernie Taupin, as well as his
struggles with depression, substance abuse, and
acceptance of his sexual orientation. The events of the
film are told in flashback with the frame narrative of
Elton in an alcoholics anonymous meeting. The flashbacks
also contain staged musical numbers of Elton's songs, as
imagined in his head during pivotal moments in his life.

The Upside
Inspired by a true story, The Upside is a heartfelt comedy about a recently
paroled ex-convict (Kevin Hart) who strikes up an unusual and
unlikely friendship with a paralyzed billionaire (Bryan Cranston).
When you’ve got two powerhouse performers like this it is very difficult not to
find oneself at least temporarily charmed. (Nicole Kidman, alas,
is very much in the background, but is sturdy, as are smaller players like
Julianna Margulies and Golshifteh Farahani.)
The Buzz...
Disney’s live action take on the classic 1992 animated Aladdin
flew slightly higher at the international box office compared to Sunday’s
estimates, with a $122M start. That lands the Will Smith starrer right at the
top end of industry predictions with a better than expected debut in some Asian
markets where word of mouth made for increased weekend play.
Harry Styles teamed up with Stevie Nicks at the
afterparty for the Gucci Cruise 2020 fashion show
at the Capitolini Museums in Rome. The duo performed Landslide and Stop Dragging
My Heart Around for a crowd that included Zoe Saldana, A$AP
Rocky and Elton John. Styles was in attendance as the new
face of Gucci fragrance. Styles stole the show at the star-studded fête and
proved it's a new era for men's fashion.
Netflix's final Marvel series is wrapping up very soon. The
streaming service has revealed the first teaser for Marvel's Jessica Jones
Season 3, the last installment in the adventures of its eponymous heroine
(played by Krysten Ritter), and it looks like the final bow will
be an eventful one indeed.
While the majority of Hollywood studios have remained quiet on Georgia’s
“Heartbeat Bill,” Ted Sarandos is now threatening to pull
Netflix’s multi-million dollar operations in the state should the
anti-abortion bill become law.
Olivia Wilde’s critically acclaimed feature directorial debut
Booksmart dominated social media buzz over Memorial Day after it struggled
at the box office with a four-day opening below $9 million. While its gross more
or less fell in line with pre-release tracking, many critics and fans expected
the rave reviews to result in a box office hit that broke into the double digits
in its much-anticipated debut.
NBC is serving up the video news for which it is known, but doesn’t mind
if you don’t get it through your TV. NBC hopes a rising generation of news
junkies will turn to its new streaming video service for the long and short of
it all. The new offering, NBC News Now, provides minutes long news updates
called “Briefly’s” as well as in-depth reportage that expands some of the
stories TV viewers might see on Today or NBC Nightly
News.
Daniel Wright, a Season 7 contestant on The Biggest
Loser, died Sunday almost two years after being diagnosed with leukemia.
He was 30.
Meek Mill's claim the Cosmopolitan Hotel keeps a
blacklist of black rappers is BS, according to sources connected to the hotel.
Meek's attorney, Joe Tacopina, made a bombshell allegation against
the resort, claiming he has knowledge of a list that specifically makes black
rappers persona non grata, and he believes that's precisely why his client was
ordered to leave the hotel without even getting out of his vehicle, or face
arrest.
Luann de Lesseps is still pissing off judges and her
probation officer, but her real-life problems are not jeopardizing her reality
TV future with Real Housewives of New York.
Sources close to production say Luann's position and security on the show are as
strong as ever, despite the fact she continues to run into trouble while on
probation for her drunken arrest case from 17 months ago.
John Lennon's tracksuit, worn during a 1970 trip to Denmark with
Yoko, is going up for sale through the memorabilia company, Moments
in Time, and they're hawking this vintage getup for a cool
$35,000.
