At The Movies

The Break Up
After Brooke (Jennifer Aniston) calls it quits with her boyfriend Gary (Vince Vaughn), neither person is willing to move out of the condo they share. Taking the advice of their respective friends and confidants (and a few total strangers), they both engage in mental warfare designed to force the other person to flee the premises, until they both realize they might be fighting to keep their relationship alive. Vince Vaughn balances out whatever feminine tilt that this film could have ever had, and rises it to a level above the average chick flick.

On DVD
The Family Stone

The Stones, a New England family, have their annual holiday gathering. The eldest son brings his girlfriend home to meet his parents, brothers and sisters. The bohemian Stones greet their visitor, a high-powered, controlling New Yorker, with a mix of awkwardness, confusion and hostility. Before the holiday is over, relationships will unravel while new ones are formed, secrets will be revealed, and the family Stone will come together through its extraordinary capacity for love.

The Buzz..

The nominations are in for the 17th Annual MuchMusic Video Awards. Leading the pack with five nominations apiece are Billy Talent, Kardinal Offishall with Ray Robinson, and Massari, followed by The Trews with four noms. Up for 3 awards each are City and Colour, Green Day, Kanye West, Nickelback, and Metric.

Kanye West and Ludacris went on trial yesterday in New York City for allegedly stealing the lyrics and beat of their 2003 collaboration Stand Up. It's up to a jury to decide whether or not the song was lifted from an original composition by New Jersey group It's Only Family.

Proving that being in a rock band is all you need to get girls, Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister has been named one of Maxim magazine's Living Legends of Sex. He lands at number eight on the list, which also includes Gene Simmons of KISS, Jack Nicholson, Magic Johnson and Charlie Sheen.

Madame Tussauds wax museum in New York has unveiled a brand new Britney Spears statue, complete with a robotic heaving bosom. The “vintage” Britney pose is intended to represent the pop star live in performance back in 2000.

jessica dukes it out

Move over Jessica Simpson, and make room for Kristin Cavallari. The producers of The Dukes of Hazzard are reportedly eyeing the blonde bombshell to fill some daisy dukes for a prequel because they like her innocence. This might not come as good news to Jessica. Cavallari has been romantically linked to her ex, Nick Lachey.

Congratulations go out to Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, who now have their first child together. Gwen gave birth to a seven and a half pound baby boy on Friday morning. The rock star couple have given their child the regal name Kingston James McGregor Rossdale, or “King” for short.

Beck fans will get a new album this year, and it looks like he's focusing on acoustic material again. A note at Beck.com says, "Beck has just completed his new album, which he's been in the studio working on with producer Nigel Godrich. The album is due out this fall." This is the third time Beck has worked with Godrich, best known for his work with Radiohead.

Singer and film director Rob Zombie will soon have his own show on Turner Classic Movies. He's been tapped as the host of TCM Underground, a late night series that will feature off the wall movies chosen and introduced by Zombie.

Christine Taylor will join License to Wed starring Robin Williams, Mandy Moore, and John Krasinski. The romantic comedy tells of a young couple whose wedding plans are interrupted when the minister of the bride's church order the couple to take a marriage preparation course. In order for him to marry them, they must pass the course.

Teri Hatcher will lend her voice to Henry Selick's adaptation of the Neil Gaiman children's novel Coraline along with Dakota Fanning. Hatcher will play both the mother of the title character (voiced by Fanning) and her other mother in a parallel universe.

Akiva Goldsman, screenwriter on The Da Vinci Code, will return for Angels and Demons for Sony Columbia Pictures. Angels and Demons takes place before The Da Vinci Code and introduces the character of Robert Langdon. Both director Ron Howard and Tom Hanks have the option of joining the feature, but neither have committed to the project yet.

Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams are joining the Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There, with Ledger in negotiations to be one of seven actors that will represent the different aspects of Dylan's life story and music. Christian Bale, Julianne Moore and Richard Gere have also been cast in the feature.

Danny Glover is in final negotiations to star in Michel Gondry's Be Kind, Rewind for New Line Cinema. He will join Jack Black and Kirsten Dunst, both of whom have already joined the film. The movie has a video store clerk (Jack Black) who becomes magnetized at a local power plant. He accidentally erases all the videotapes at the local video store owned by Glover's character. Instead of telling the store owner what happened, Black and his friend decide to re-create the films using the townspeople as actors.

Willem Dafoe, Emma de Caunes and Jean Rochefort have joined the supporting cast of Bean 2 starring Rowan Atkinson in the role which made him known worldwide. The sequel to the 1997 film has Mr. Bean traveling to southern France where his video diary accidentally gets scheduled at the Cannes Film Festival.
