The Buzz...

Sam Mendes is the surprise choice to helm the as yet untitled Bond 23. Mendes is currently in negotiations with Eon big cheeses, Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, to direct the movie, which is plugging ahead despite uncertainty over the sale of MGM, Bond’s parent company. If he signs on the line that is dotted, production could well begin as early as June, for a release in 2011.

It looks like Rihanna has finally rebounded with a new man. The singer was photographed in Mexico with L.A. Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp.

Avatar has now made over a billion dollars worldwide after taking the top spot at the box office for the third straight week. James Cameron’s movie about blue aliens is the now the fourth highest selling film in movie history, and is on course to break the record set by Titanic, also by Cameron, for the most successful movie of all time.

Ke$ha might be able to add another dollar sign to her name after breaking a record for digital sales. The rapper’s debut single TiK ToK was downloaded 610,000 times last week, making it the highest digital total for a female artist in a week. Her debut album, Animal, was released on January 5th.

Sandra Bullock ended last year with two Golden Globe nods. She ushered in this one by shattering box office records. Bullock's acclaimed film The Blind Side became the first movie in history to pass the $200 million mark with only one top billed female star. In its seventh week, the film earned $208.5 million in box office sales. None of Bullock's past films in which she was the only star actress hit $200 million in sales. It's not even a record Reese Witherspoon, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep or Angelina Jolie can lay claim to.

Word is circulating that comedian Russell Brand and singer Katy Perry reportedly are engaged, through the story remains unconfirmed.

Former Destiny's Child star Michelle Williams will see her name in lights next month when she high kicks her way into the starring role of Roxie Hart in Chicago on Broadway. Williams, 29, will play the wannabe star turned murderess for a limited run in the hit musical from Feb. 8 to March 28. Williams will be taking over from Ashlee Simpson Wentz, who debuted in the revival on Dec. 1.

Taylor Lautner is getting $7.5 million for his next pic. The project is Paramount's Northern Lights, a Tom Cruise vehicle to be directed by John Moore (Max Payne) with a start date of April 1st.

Sharon
Stone will be appearing on NBC's Law and Order SVU later this season. Stone will be appearing in a four show arc, playing a former cop who's become a prosecutor, an assistant district attorney.

With a single already on the radio, Donny Osmond will be hitting the airwaves in a new way. The reigning Dancing with the Stars champ will be hosting a daytime radio show. About 60 stations will broadcast this music-based show when it launches on January 18.

Poison's Bret Michaels and Sharon Osbourne are among the stars who will compete for Donald Trump's approval as the new Celebrity Apprentice.

Godsmack's Sully Erna has reached a multi million dollar court settlement with the victim of a car accident in which he was involved. Andover, Massachusetts newspaper The Eagle Tribune reports that 27 year old Lindsay Taylor will collect 3.3 million dollars from Erna and Godsmack Touring Inc. to cover expenses resulting from the 2007 accident.

Green Day's acclaimed American Idiot musical has landed a run on Broadway. The production will open at New York's St. James Theatre at the end of March. The show, directed by Michael Mayer and featuring songs from Green Day's albums American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, was a smash success when it opened at the Berkeley Rep in California last year. Every night of its eight week run was a sell out.
