At The Movies

Battle: Los Angeles
When Earth is attacked by unknown alien forces, Los Angeles becomes the last stand in an all out battle for mankind's survival. For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world; Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world's great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It's up to a Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they've ever encountered before.

Inside Job
Fresh from the stage at the Academy Awards, where it won the trophy for Best Documentary, Inside Job presents a comprehensive analysis exposing the shocking truth behind the economic crisis of 2008. The global financial meltdown, at a cost of over $20 trillion, resulted in millions of people losing their homes and jobs. Through extensive research and interviews with major financial insiders, politicians and journalists, and narrated by Matt Damon, the film traces the rise of a rogue industry and unveils the corrosive relationships which have corrupted politics, regulation and academia.

The Buzz...

So long, Charlie. Warner Bros. Television has dropped the actor from its hit comedy Two and A Half Men. “After careful consideration, Warner Bros. Television has terminated Charlie Sheen’s services from `Two and A Half Men’ effective immediately,” according to a studio statement. No decision has been made on the future of comedy. CBS still has a deal in place with the studio for a ninth season of Men, which remains the most watched comedy on television.

Angelina Jolie’s Tomb Raider films were met with either derision or apathy from most movie fans, which is perhaps why the next Lara Croft movie adventure is going for a complete system reboot. Gk Films have just acquired the feature film rights to the Tomb Raider video game, and producer Graham King (The Departed) is planning on retooling the franchise. The production company have scheduled a 2013 release for the film, which apparently will be an origins story so don’t expect Angelina Jolie to return.

Warner Bros. has become the first movie studio to offer movie rentals through Facebook, offering Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight for viewing through the social network for the cost of 30 Facebook credits ($3 in the non Mark Zuckerberg world). Starting immediately, aspiring movie watchers can visit facebook.com/darkknight and click on a rent button.

Ke$ha would like her fans to Get Sleazy, but in a responsible way. The We R Who We R singer is getting prepped to head out on tour and will be giving her fans more than just a show. Ke$ha and LifeStyles have partnered up to plaster the singer's face on thousands of rubber wrappers, which she will shoot into the audience at her live shows.

Justin Bieber‘s old high school, Stratford Northwestern Secondary, is auctioning off an autographed sneaker worn by the Biebs during a recent visit back to his hometown. The size 7.5 purple Nike sneaker has Justin’s full name signed on the side (which he rarely does) as well as dirt and scuff marks on the sole (as proof that he’s actually worn the shoe). The shoe was personally donated by the Biebs to his former school and proceeds from the auction will go directly towards the construction of a broadcasting and communications studio at the school.

NBC will bring Law & Order: Los Angeles out of the creative retooling shop next month. The series, which went dark in December to reshuffle its cast, will return with a two-hour premiere Monday, April 11. It settles into its regular 10 o'clock home the following week, taking over the spot currently held by Harry's Law, which will have ended its season by then.

Angry Birds will be available on Facebook later this year, it has been announced. Rovio Mobile has told Wired that it will add new features to the game when it launches on the social networking platform. "There will be completely new aspects to it that just haven't been experienced on any other platform," said chief executive Mikael Hed.

Simon Cowell could land Cheryl Cole a 'consolation role' as a mentor on The X Factor USA, according to a report. It had been suggested that the Girls Aloud singer has failed to secure a position on the judging panel over network Fox's fears that she is not famous enough. However, The Sun reports that Cowell wants to use Cole to help the contestants throughout the process.

Rob Zombie has been confirmed as the director for the adaptation of Motley Crue's 2002 memoirs The Dirt; The True Confessions Of The World’s Most Notorious Rock Band.

American Idiot is coming to Canadian theatres December 2011, and Toronto is hosting the only Canadian casting call to be part of the production. The critically acclaimed musical, modeled after Green Day’s 2004 album, opened last spring in New York on Broadway and is now making its rounds across North America.

The world is not ready for Baby Gaga: The Ice Cream. A store in London, England recently stocked up on a new flavour made “from human breast milk” flavoured with vanilla and lemon. And Lady Gaga is pissed. She issued a statement aimed at the ice cream manufacturers, Icecreamists Parlour, saying she’d take legal action.
