At The Movies
Nomadland
This film follows a woman in her sixties who, after
losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a
journey through the American West, living as a
van-dwelling modern day nomad. Nomadland is an
authentic, culturally american movie, opposed to the
unauthentic, modern day chaos that is often perceived in
the word as representative of what is "american". A
stunning road movie, distinctly american, with a soul of
its own. Chloe Zhao's film with
Frances McDormand as a widowed nomad who
spends her years living from place to place in the
western United States and working various occupations is
a stunning piece of cinema. While the plot of the film
may sound rather understated, which is actually part of
its inherent beauty.
