Off The Record...

Radiohead

Kid A

Thanks to the reception of OK Computer three years ago, Radiohead’s fourth album is without question the buzz album of the fall. It's an earnest and successful attempt by the British quintet to distance itself from its past and to reinvent our notions of pop music, using soundscapes rather than songs, and instrumental choices that are a far cry from the group's previous forays into its own brand of guitar rock. An odd, perplexing, and utterly fascinating collection of new music, this album will secure the name Radiohead as true innovators on the music scene.

At The Movies...
Remember the Titans
Based on events following the forced integration of an all-white Virginia high school in 1971, Remember the Titans is the true story of Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), an African-American football coach who is handed the top job of leading the Titans to a championship season. The influx of black students also adds a lot of new talent to the Titans, but with it comes friction with white players. Remember the Titans is no high school romp. In its own way, this is a demanding film, morally and intellectually, especially for anybody who comes into the theater wanting only to watch bone-crunching football action.

On Video...
U-571
An exciting submarine adventure about the crew of a vintage WWI sub pressed into action to beat a German sub to capture the damaged U-571, a U-boat that contains the Enigma device, a secret German coding machine the Allies need to decipher German naval movements. The action gets tense and heavy as the Americans take over the German sub but find themselves stranded in hostile waters when their sub is torpedoed. Traditional and wonderful tension mounting undersea action.

The Buzz...

Five years and one month after a riveted America watched as a jury found him innocent of stabbing two people to death, the O.J. Simpson murder trial returns to television as a mini-series with the football star relegated to the role of a bit player. Simpson will be played by Raymond Forchin but a CBS spokeswoman said he will be seldom seen in the movie and depicted only in profile, from behind or in shadows.

Steve Miner (Halloween H20)  is set to produce and possibly direct Markus Redmond and Ivy William's  The After Killer spec script for Columbia Pictures.

Harrison Ford is in talks with Intermedia Films to portray a Russian submarine captain in the contemporary drama K-19. Shooting is scheduled to begin in February on the $20 million feature about a the sub crew's struggle to prevent a nuclear meltdown.

Miramax Films is backing Wes Craven's upcoming thriller Drowning Ruth. Before Craven directs that film, though, he has to finish work on Fountain Society, which is based on his own book.

Sotheby's auctioned off 40 Snoopy statues at the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN. The auction helped to raise $823,000 towards the construction of a permanent memorial to Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, who died of colon cancer in February.

VH1 has picked up Smash, the half-hour comedy series being produced by Gene Simmons. Production is slated to begin later this month on the pilot for the series about a 20-something black performer/ businessman who tries to duplicate the success he enjoyed as a teen singer.

Ozzy Osbourne will allow the MTV camera into his house in their new show Cribs, which peaks into rock star's homes for a tour during every episode.

State parole officials rejected a parole bid Tuesday from John Lennon's killer, saying Mark David Chapman hadn't lost his need for notoriety, a drive that fueled his "most vicious and violent act."

Claiming irreconcilable differences, Paul Anka's wife has filed for legal separation after more than 37 years of marriage.

Ted Turner donated $500 in gratitude to a fire department whose firefighters helped battle a blaze on his ranch.

LeAnn Rimes is performing again after health problems forced her to cancel 30 appearances.

Machine Head are working on songs for new album and should begin record before the end of the year. They also might have some west coast shows around Thanksgiving, including a possible Los Angeles gig.
