Off The Record...

Nashville Pussy

Let Them Eat.....

Making no apologies for their in your face, adrenaline laced rock and roll barrage, this band goes for your throat as well as your ears.  Lead guitarist Ruyter Suys propels the tracks while her husband/frontman Blaine Cartwright screams his lewd, redneck-drenched lyrics like a crazed hillbilly on a week long moonshine bender.  Relying heavily on their legendary live performances to sell discs, Mercury records has taken note and signed the band to a multi-million dollar deal. Let Them Eat... will satisfy even the hardiest hard rock appetites.

At The Movies...

There's Something About Mary

The sleeper hit of the summer, brought to us by the creators of Dumb and Dumber and Kingpin, Something About Mary is like a breath of fresh air.  Matt Dillon and Ben Stiller lead a gallery of unscrupulous characters that vie for the attention of Mary (Cameron Diaz).  Despite the spurts of low brow humor, this movie is clever and sweetly romantic, with loads of scenes that will keep you rolling in the aisles.  Easily the funniest release in years, this is the film that friends are telling friends not to miss.

On Video...

The Borrowers

John Goodman heads the cast in this delightful fantasy based on the popular novels of Mary Norton.  Tiny people co-exist with their human counterparts, borrowing whatever they need to survive, while we run around complaining when things go missing for no reason whatsoever.  A mixture of Gulliver's Travels and Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, with spectacular effects, lavish sets and clever charm.

The Buzz...

The only official set of Titanic trading cards is being made by Inkworks for sale in October. Packed in a real miniature steamer trunk of genuine leather with a gold-plated latch, the set of 25 photo cards will be limited to 10,000 copies and is scheduled to be released in conjunction with the September 1st video release of Titanic.

A bidding war over broadcasting rights for NHL games may drive the price of the next contract upwards of $400 million for five years, starting next season.  ESPN has raised Fox's current bid to secure the exclusive rights.  Does this mean non-executives might be able to afford tix for hockey games.

A new red wine called Cuvee Lestat is named after the vampire Lestat from Anne Rice's novels. Rice's husband, artist Stan Rice, created the labels for the wine, produced at Babcock Vineyards in California.

Bruce Springsteen is putting the E Street Band back together for a multiple CD collection and an extensive tour next summer.  The Boss dumped the group back in 1989 and has yet to recapture the success of his Glory Days.

Mechanical Animals, the new release from shock rockers Marilyn Manson, has already created a fuss weeks before it's release.  K-Mart, Target and Wal-Mart have decided not to carry the album, due to either the parental warning sticker for obscene language or the explicit art cover which shows a naked androgynous Manson.

Al Lewis, better known to baby boomers as Grandpa on the Munsters, has sunk his teeth into the political ring.  He is currently running for governor of New York.

Three students at Indiana's Hanover College have received a $6,000 grant from their alma mater to follow the summer tour of organic band Phish.  Phish has been touted as the heir apparent to the now defunct Grateful Dead.

A rare guitar played by rock icon Jimi Hendrix sold for $40,000 at an auction of musical memorabilia today. The distinctive Gibson Sunburst guitar had expected to fetch double that amount.

Tom Hanks has hired Into Thin Air author Jon Krakauer to write the script for his project about late Hawaiian surfer Mark Foo and his fellow daredevil wave-riders.

Mykelti Williamson, who played Tom Hanks' shrimp-loving pal Bubba in Forrest Gump, is on trial for attempted manslaughter for allegedly attacking his ex-wife's friend.

Jim Bakker, who left his Praise the Lord television ministry in disgrace in 1987, is engaged to Lori Beth Graham. She is a youth counselor he met last month while she was speaking to a woman's group in Los Angeles.

A lot of acts are coming out live this fall, on record that is.  Rush will release their fourth live album, Different Stages, Hanson has plans to release a show recorded in Seattle this summer, and the original Black Sabbath will see Black Sabbath Live that was taped during last years reunion tour, on the shelves Oct 6th.
