Off The Record...

Black Crowes

By Your Side

The band's fifth full-length is a return to the driving rock 'n' roll the Crowes championed on their early recordings. Full of gravelly guitar riffs and bluesy chord progressions, The Robinson brothers continue a long-standing tradition started by the Rolling Stones and carry it a notch further.  Lead singer, Chris Robinson, layers his distinctive voice over slide guitar and blazing harmonica riffs, well apparent on their new hit single, Kickin’ My Heart Around.

At The Movies...

She's All That

Freddie Prinze, Jr. plays a jock who is dumped by his girlfriend just six weeks before his high-school prom. In order to regain his status, Prinze takes on a bet from a fellow classmate to transform an artsy dork into his new hot babe, as well as his ex-girl's rival for Prom Queen. Just the right touch of tongue-in-cheek bounce to keep the laughs coming, as the talented leads keep the romantic chemistry bubbling along just right, with a soundtrack that will send you out of the theater humming.

On Video...

Mafia

Typical Jim  Abrahams' (Hot Shots) spoof, this time taking pot shots at the Mafia in a rough take-off of The Godfather.  Every scene you can imagine that might lend itself to parody takes a grilling by the talented cast: the late Lloyd Bridges (as the patriarch of the powerful crime family), Jay Mohr, Christina Applegate and Olympia Dukakis. Definitely for fans of this genre.

The Buzz...

Despite persistent speculation that he will return for another season of Home Improvement if the price is right, Tim Allen has stated that this is the end of the road.

The Offspring have turned down an offer to play the main stage of Lollapalooza this summer, in favor of their own tour. Guns N' Roses are currently considering signing on as the headliners for this year's festival.

Metallica will receive a Diamond Award from the Recording Industry Association of America to mark more than 10 million sales of their 1991 self-titled black album.  Also receiving the award are AC/DC for Back in Black and the Eagles for their Greatest Hits: 1971-75.

Pamela Anderson had to bolt from Uruguay when she was mobbed by adoring male teenage fans. Anderson was filming a suntan lotion commercial there.

Amid excitement generated by a new album due in March entitled Rage Before Beauty, legendary rockers Pretty Things had their official website shut down by its ISP due to excessive hits.  Back on line for now, check it out while you can at mindspring.com/~us000091/pretties.htm

Adam Sandler will voice a cartoon character based on himself in a full-length animated musical comedy Columbia pictures.

Miramax plans to produce its first animated feature, The Adventures of Tom Thumb and Thumbelina, starring Elijah Wood and Jennifer Love Hewitt as the title characters.

Fox TV president Sandy Grushow has stated that while stealing a hit series from another network would be a bloodbath, Fox might well be willing to help Buffy The Vampire Slayer jump ship if WB refuses to step up to fair market value for the hit show.

Spin will still pay former editor Craig Marks's legal fees in his assault case against Marilyn Manson, despite the fact Marks was fired from the magazine Tuesday.

Terry Fitzgerald, General Manager of McFarlane Productions denies reports that Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn, shelled out $2.7 million for Mark McGwire's 70th home run ball.

The first official Star Trek cookbook is now out from Pocket Books, co-written by Ethan Phillips, who plays the loveable cook Neelix on Star Trek: Voyager. Among the dishes described are: Dr. McCoy's Tennessee Smoke Baked Beans, Borg Tricorder Pie, and Bajoran Ratamba

It looks like rock star Ozzy Osbourne hasn't abandoned the rock `n' roll high life after all.  Ozzy recently posed next to a giant skull filled with high-grade marijuana for a cover photo that will be used on the March issue of High Times magazine.
