At The Movies

Brother Bear

Disney puts forth another exciting new animated holiday adventure. Set against the majestic natural splendor of the Great American Northwest, the film tells the story of a boy named Kenai, whose life takes an unexpected turn when the Great Spirits transform him into a bear, the creature he hates most. Befriended by a bear cub named Koda, Kenai sets out to regain his human form while his brother (who doesn’t realize Kenai is now a bear) pursues him on a mission of revenge and family honor. With breathtaking animation, powerful emotion and humor, this film introduces a memorable cast of characters and paints an unforgettable tale of courage, honor and self-discovery.

On DVD

Indiana Jones Trilogy

The creators of the Indiana Jones series, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have indeed enshrined their action hero, finally collecting his adventures and theirs in a handsome four-disc set. The set's first three discs contain restored versions of the Jones films: Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade. The fourth disc packs in more than three hours of bonus materials supervised by director Spielberg and story-weaver Lucas, featuring new interviews with pretty much anyone fans would want to hear from (and then some). For many fans, the Indy Jones trilogy was the holy grail of DVD, one of the format's few high-profile holdouts.

Off The Record

The Strokes
Room On Fire

Somehow in rock's limited vernacular, the Strokes have found a way of talking that's all their own. From the first note of their second album, you're fully aware of who this is. And unlike a lot of groups, it isn't the emergence of the lead singer because the singer here is as anonymous as they come, with his generic Richard Hell yips and Iggy Pop gestures. The sound of the band working together, the sum of the parts totaling their own thing, is what you're hearing here, which coincidentally also means that their second album sounds much like the first. Sure, they sneer with the machismo of angry young punks, but this is mostly more angular rock from guys working quite the angle.

The Buzz...

This year's World Series between the Florida Marlins and the New York Yankees finished as the third lowest rated ever.

A man found guilty of stalking Britney Spears and ordered to stay away from her for three years has sued the pop star, claiming her security guards intimidated him and inflicted extreme emotional distress. He seeks unspecified damages.

Following the Sci Fi channel's threat to sue, NASA is releasing 36 pages of documents connected to the 1965 UFO incident in Kecksburg, Pennsylvania.

Nicole Kidman is becoming the new face of Chanel. Moulin Rouge cohort Baz Luhrmann is creating, directing and producing the ad campaign, which will be ready in the fall of 2004.

Elvis still king

Elvis Presley is leading Forbes.com list of top-earning deceased celebrities for the third year in a row, to the tune of $40 million. Runner-up is Peanuts cartoon creator Charles Schulz, who earned $32 million, followed by Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien who rang in $22 million.

Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller have been chosen by MGM to remake the 1979 thriller The Amityville Horror. The original film inspired seven sequels.

The Jinx spin-off movie from Die Another Day, which would have starred Halle Berry in the lead role, has been put on the shelf. The producers of the Bond films were looking forward to making the Jinx movie but MGM has decided to pull the plug on it for unknown reasons.

Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant have been tapped by Disney to pen a remake of Herbie: The Love Bug. The new Herbie film will put the Volkswagon beetle with a mind of its own in the world of NASCAR racing.

Selma Blair and Drew Barrymore are the top contenders to play Lois Lane in McG's Superman. Vin Diesel has met with McG and Jon Peters about playing Supes arch-villain Lex Luthor.

Scary Movie 3 chuckled up some boffo box office. The third installment in the horror-lampooning franchise tallied a frightening $49.7 million and set the record for the best ever October opening.

Pearl Jam, Wilco, Counting Crows, Willie Nelson and others joined Neil Young and his band mates in Crosby, Stills & Nash for the 17th annual Bridge School Benefit concerts outside San Francisco. The shows benefit the Bridge School, which Young and his wife Pegi founded as a learning facility for severely disabled children.

This season’s installment of the Surreal Life will feature Ron Jeremy, Tammy Faye Bakker, Vanilla Ice and Erik Estrada co-habitating for two weeks.

Creators of the Casino and Gaming Television network are betting that a national interest in gambling will translate into a desire to watch it on TV. The new network is scheduled to launch in 2004 as a digital cable and satellite channel with shows such as Winning Hand, with poker experts offering tips on the game, and Dusk 'Til Dawn, a tour of night spots in Las Vegas, Monaco and other gambling destinations.

Justin Timberlake has been putting out the word that he's looking for a publisher for his upcoming tell-all autobiography. His memoirs have reportedly inspired frantic bidding from book houses, soaring into seven figures.
