At the Movies

Starsky & Hutch
The 1970s television series comes to the big screen in this action/ comedy starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson as a tough pair of cops keeping the streets safe in their own unusual style. This script and the characters are not faithful to the television series, taking a more comic spoof direction, but the direction, editing, wardrobe and soundtrack certainly are. The direction by Phillips and editing by Leslie Jones are closely tuned to the styles of the late seventies. This is most evident when the filmmakers are capturing the franchise’s signature car chases. If you saw and liked Zoolander or Charlie’s Angels, then you’re certainly going to enjoy this film too.

On DVD
School of Rock
It has been more than 6 months since I first saw The School of Rock and I am still laughing. Jack Black is like an H.R. Pufnstuff with a bit of a buzz who pretends that he's his roommate Ned Schneebly in order to take a job as a substitute teacher. Arriving at an ultra conservative and ultra expensive prep school he begins the educational journey of rock and roll transformation to the children. Hey some critics hated it and the uncool population hasn’t even seen it, but none of that matters to even a microscopic degree, because this is a movie in which Jack Black and a bunch of fifth-graders play AC/DC songs, and resistance is futile. One of the best comedies of 2003.

The Buzz...

Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, in the midst of a sold-out encore run as Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom respectively in Mel Brooks' The Producers, will not be extending their Broadway tour of duty past April 4.

Leonardo DiCaprio may join Martin Scorsese's U.S. remake of the Hong Kong movie trilogy Infernal Affairs. DiCaprio is said to be interested in one of two roles, according to insiders. Brad Pitt is also eyeing the other lead role. The remake is being setup at Warner Bros. Based on the Chinese gangster pic, the remake will be set in Boston and will have tough Irish-American mobsters and cops feuding with one another.

Paramount Pictures will move forward on the Johnny Knoxville project, Hot Dog Vendor. The comedy will focus on a pair of hot dog vendors in downtown Los Angeles who find themselves in a business battle.

Charlize Theron could star in a live-action film adaptation of the MTV cartoon series Aeon Flux. Created by Peter Cheung, the MTV series revolved around a killer known for her extreme style, cool attitude, tight clothes and propensity for dying. Paramount Pictures will distribute the film and is looking at a June production start.

Regis still hot

ABC announced that Regis Philbin will be dishing trivia questions and big bucks again in a special run of what is dubbed "the super-charged version" of its original big hit gamer Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain was one of the most anticipated projects with Brad Pitt attached to star, but Pitt dropped out of the film opting to star in Troy instead. Hugh Jackman could possibly land the opportunity to star in the film written and to be directed by Aronofsky himself.

The deal Artisan Entertainment and Marvel Comics made a few years ago will now see the deal through Lions Gate Films and Marvel, who recently announced that Iron Fist, Black Widow, and The Punisher 2 are the first projects that will be worked on in this newly joint venture.

Rob Schneider has moved Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo to Sony Picture Entertainment, who will be producing and distributing the sequel instead of Touchstone Pictures. Both Rob Schneider and Eddie Griffin are set to reprise their roles from the first movie. In the sequel, Deuce gets invited by his pimp to vacation in Amsterdam, only to discover that he's being pressed back into the flesh biz.

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane will make his feature film debut with Family Union. Mike Barker and Matthew Weitzman wrote the script about a man who must travel home every five years to the home of his dysfunctional family.

Tom Green has signed to join the comedy Bob the Butler. The project is being described as a story along the lines of Mrs. Doubtfire.

Incubus has laid out its plans for the North American leg of its world tour. The run will kick off June 23 in Atlantic City, N.J., and close Oct. 11 in Richmond, Va., playing a total of 62 dates.

In a virtual sweep of the Razzie awards that "honor" the worst of the very worst in Hollywood, the Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck mega-flop was accorded the Golden Raspberry as worst film of the year.

Paul McCartney is set to rock the Glastonbury music festival this summer. The former Beatle, 61, will take top billing at Britain's biggest open-air music event on June 26, the middle day of the three-day spectacular.

According to a source close to John Corabi (ex-Motley Crue), a new supergroup is brewing in Los Angeles featuring Corabi on vocals, plus Billy Duffy from The Cult and Jerry Cantrell from Alice In Chains on guitar.

As The Darkness continues their quest to conquer the U-S, the Brit rockers' album Permission to Land has been certified gold for sales of 500-thousand copies.
