The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou
Internationally famous oceanographer Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) and
his crew Team Zissou set sail on an expedition to hunt down the mysterious,
elusive, possibly non-existant Jaguar Shark that
killed Zissou's partner during the documentary filming of their latest
adventure. They are joined on their voyage by a young airline co-pilot who may
or may not be Zissou's son (Owen Wilson), a beautiful journalist (Cate Blanchett)
assigned to
write a profile of Zissou, and Zissou's estranged wife and co-producer, Eleanor
(Anjelica Huston). They face overwhelming complications including pirates,
kidnapping, and bankruptcy. Very quirky and odd at times, but overall an
enjoyable outing.

Garden State
He may play a newbie doctor on Scrubs, but Zach Braff comes off like a pro with
his first feature. Writing, directing and starring (the last probably just so he
could kiss love interest Natalie Portman), Braff plays a struggling,
antidepressant
addled actor returning home to New Jersey for his mother's funeral. In his
zombiefied state he reconnects with old friends (Peter Sarsgaard), finds love
(Portman), gets off his meds and learns to live like a human again. Some
familiar indie
quirkiness clutters the screen, but Braff paints a wonderful picture, adding
appropriately cool music and writing dialogue that you would hear coming out of
the mouths of your twentysomething friends. Any flaws are offset by a genuinely
dark sense
of humor, understated performances and a rejection of tidy conclusions. This is
a sign of a blooming career.
The Buzz...
Eric
Clapton revealed that he and his former mates in rock's first supergroup
Cream, singer-bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger
Baker, are planning to reunite for four shows next May at London's Royal
Albert Hall, the legendary venue where the power trio played its final gig in
1968.
Uma Thurman, last seen as a sword-wielding assassin in Quentin
Tarantino's Kill Bill movies, is in talks to replace Nicole Kidman as
Ulla, the bombshell Swedish secretary in Mel Brooks' big-screen
adaptation of his hit Broadway musical, The Producers.
Millions of Americans went shopping for comedy this weekend, giving the
star-studded Meet the Fockers the record for the best single Christmas Day box
office take. The sequel, reuniting Ben Stiller and Robert
De Niro and adding Dustin Hoffman and Barbra
Streisand as Stiller's parents, earned $44.7 million over the holiday
weekend according to studio estimates.
David Carradine says he inspired the title role in the Kill Bill
movies, but the part was originally written for Warren Beatty.
Carradine explained during an interview with the Chicago Tribune earlier this
year that Beatty initially landed the role but director Quentin Tarantino kept
instructing him to act like Carradine.

David Goyer,
writer on the Blade trilogy and on Batman Begins, will do a
feature film version of The Flash. Goyer will write,
produce and direct the movie while DC Comics will finance the film along with
Warner Bros. Pictures. The Flash was originally
published in 1939 and told the story of a man with the ability to run at super
speeds.
In a dismal
year for the touring industry, with ticket prices soaring and seats going
unsold, music fans in North America partied like it was 1989 as Prince
and Madonna topped the concert box office. According to freshly tabulated
estimates
provided by concert trade publication Pollstar, Prince sold $87.4 million
in tickets in 2004, while Madonna earned $79.5 million. Prince also worked a bit
harder for his payday, playing 96 shows, compared with 39 for Madonna.
Real estate mogul turned TV star Donald Trump is turning his next
prime-time boardroom from a battle of the sexes into a contest between book
smarts and street smarts. A team of nine college graduates faces off against a
group of nine
entrepreneurs whose formal education ended with high school when the third
edition of NBC's hit reality show The Apprentice
debuts on January 20th.
Sharon Osbourne has snatched the Rock Personality of the Year
award out of the hands of husband Ozzy. Ozzy picked up the accolade last year
after scoring his first ever number one in a three-decade chart career. But this
year, Sharon, 52, outdid her husband and other stars on the list with her rock
and roll antics.
The Killers, Paul Oakenfold and The
Crystal Method will play the fifth annual Giant Village New Year's
Eve party on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles.
Modest Mouse has been named Band of the Year by Spin magazine.
Green Day's American Idiot was named Best Single, and Franz
Ferdinand is Best New Band.
The Pixies, who are done touring for the year, are selecting the
best live footage from their monster reunion tour for an upcoming DVD.
Peavey, the world-famous musical instrument manufacturer, has announced
that it has parted with Edward Van Halen after a 13-year
partnership. Peavey collaborated with the guitarist on his signature-model
Peavey Wolfgang Series electric guitars and Peavey 5150 Series amplifiers.
Simon Crane, who has worked as a second unit director on films
such as Troy and Terminator 3, will direct his first feature film titled
Adrenaline for Intermedia Films. The company is fasttracking the project for a
midsummer project. Mike Finch will
pen the screenplay about a group of thrill seekers who use their death-defying
skills to pull off seemingly impossible heists.
Paramount Pictures will be adapting Tom Clancy's video game
Splinter Cell with Peter Berg (The Rundown) set to
direct. The game follows the plotline of government spy Sam Fisher, as he tries
to stop a terrorist organization from disaster. Two games have been released
already by Ubisoft and have sold over 6 million copies worldwide.
